How To Remove Coffee Stains

We have all had it happen at least once.  You're out to dinner, someone asks you to pass the sugar and somehow your coffee ends up on the dress or suit that looks so great on you!

Not to worry, coffee is not impossible to remove from fabric, just follow these few easy tips and your outfit can be good as new in no time.

  1. Tend to it right away.  If you're out somewhere, excuse yourself to the restroom and start to work on the stain immediately.  The longer you wait to treat the stain, the less chance you have of removing it.

  2. Work from both sides of the fabric.  Place one side of the stain against a blotting material- a paper towel will do.  Work on the other side of the stain with a soft, damp cloth blotting it to absorb as much as possible.  DO NOT RUB

  3. As soon as possible, use a stain removal product on the stain.  If it doesn't clear up with one application, try it again.

  4. When the stain has mostly disappeared, rinse the fabric in clean water and let it air dry.

  5. If the stain is still present after running it through the wash DO NOT put it in the dryer.  heat will set the stain into the fabric and you might as well kiss that outfit goodbye!  Instead, treat the stain once more and run it through the wash another time.

If you are trying to remove an old stain there are a couple of things you can try:
  • Make a solution of  1 tsp. white vinegar to 1 quart water.   Gently sponge onto the stain and try to wipe clean.
OR
  • Dampen a soft cloth and dab it into a little baking soda.  Since baking soda is extremely absorbent, it can work as a removal for the stain.  Moisten the stained area and place the cloth with baking soda on the stain and dab clean.
