Chemex Coffee Maker

Chemex Carafe

This method is perhaps the most visually attractive and versatile one I've tried yet. Using the Chemex coffee maker is the purest way of brewing filtered coffee and it produces a very full-bodied, full flavored cup. It's carafe is an elegant hourglass design and is so attractive you can brew and serve in the same vessel. This coffee maker is found in the Smithsonian Museum of Art because of its innovative and artistic design.

This method comes quite close to french press quality taste but without any grounds in your cup. The filtering process removes most oils, sediments and bitterness. Because the quality of brewing coffee this way is so great, you can save unused coffee in the fridge and reheat without compromising flavor.

  • You should use a medium grind coffee similar to what is used for an auto drip coffee maker. (See How to Grind coffee)
  • There are several filters you can use with the Chemex. Filters come in round cone filters and the traditional pre-folded square filters. They come in white and unbleached paper.

For brewing instructions, see the Chemex Coffee Maker How-to Page.
